Mismatch? What Mismatch?

Some people (ok, everyone) in the boxing community questioned Yvon Michel’s decision to put Hermann Ngoudjo (15-1) in tough with the legendary Jose Luis Castillo (55-7-1) in a super lightweight fight this past Saturday night in Las Vegas. But there is a reason that Michel has become arguably the most successful boxing promoter in Canada. He knows what he knows. And what he knew was that Ngoudjo was ready for the challenge. “He was not well known outside Montreal, but we were ready. We believed that he deserved this fight and given the opportunity, he grabbed it and showed what he could do.” (more…)

Big Week for Canadian Fighters

The Ghost of Dale Brown

The message on the answering machine at the Calgary Boxing Club where Dale Brown trains ends with this; “Boxing doesn’t build character, it reveals it.” There is perhaps no more fitting of a statement when starting a discussion about Dale “Cowboy” Brown, the veteran cruiserweight, who is set to fight again on January 19 in Edmonton, Alberta after a 6 month absence from boxing. Brown, (35-5-1, 22KO’s) will step back into the ring in a 12 rounder against Darnell “The Ding-a-Ling Man” Wilson (19-5-3, 16KO’s) for the Trans America cruiserweight title. (more…)

Brawlroom Promotions – New Horse on the Block

On January 19, there will be a new horse in the professional boxing race in Edmonton as Brawlroom Promotions rides into town with it’s inaugural show, “Welcome to the Brawlroom. It’s Fight Night”.

Brawlroom President Scott McBride has long-term intentions and, as Albertans tend to do, is thinking big, kicking off the year with an exciting card headlined by Alberta’s sweetheart Dale “Cowboy” Brown, in a Trans America Cruiserweight Title fight against Darnell “The Ding-a-Ling Man” Wilson.

The Fight Network caught up with Scott McBride by phone in Edmonton to talk to him about the upcoming show, Edmonton fans and the history of boxing in Alberta. (more…)
